Level - 7: Rhythm Variations

Strengthen timing and creativity through rhythm, patterns, and off-beat play

Introduction

Rhythm is the heartbeat of Hindustani classical music, and this course will train you to master it with both discipline and creativity. Centred on Teen Taal (16 beats), you will explore mathematical patterns, off-beat rhythmic exercises, and alankaras that strengthen timing, precision, and control.

To deepen your practice, we will use Carnatic rhythm syllables (solkattu) — vocal patterns that help internalise the taal system. You will not only count rhythm but feel it, blending melody and rhythm together. This unique approach will give you the confidence to perform, improvise, and synchronize seamlessly with tabla or other percussion.

What You'll learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Grasp the complete structure of Teen Taal (16 beats)
